Long story short, Munich has been one of the best world cup venues in the past years. This year was no exception. The crowd was even bigger than last year and the atmosphere is therefore unbelievable. It is great to see that sport is getting more recognition, I am proud to be a part of it.
All that being said it just made me want to perform well more. I knew I had a bad round in Wujiang and was determined to show not only myself but to everyone else that I belong among best climbers in the world.
Goals were set and it was now time to realise them.
I am really satisfied that I made every single semifinal this year. Somehow I felt that I knew what I need to do to make it into top 20 for the 5th time this season here in Munich. I managed to qualify as 1st in my group. Surprises just keep on coming.
Cruising through qualifications I felt confident about my climbing and determined to show my best in semifinal round.
With great climbing in the first three problems I was already qualified for the final before the last problem. Nevertheless I didn’t know that until I finished with climbing as I don’t like to calculate to much during the competition and only on my climbing. There were definitely mixed feeling while I wasn’t able to climb the last problem. I felt I might not qualify for finals, nevertheless I felt relieved finding out I qualified on 5th position.
I can’t believe I am able to write about this. For the 3rd time this year I got the chance to climb in finals. This time my only goal was to win! I showed so many times that I am ready and it’s just the matter of time when it will happen.
My goal quickly became a bit harder as I was left with 4 bloody fingertips after the 1st problem, meaning I would have to climb with tapes for the rest of the competition.
Moments like this are surely not enjoyable but I decided to try as hard as possible no matter the final result. I must say not everything went to plan but I truly enjoyed finals this time. In the end I only had 1 top which put me on 5th place.
5th place might not be even near winning but I can so close on 2 other tops and my overall performance was really good compared to other climbers and I finally felt confident that I could actually win a world cup competition.
Therefore I was far from disappointed but actually thrilled with my performance and I think many people would agree.
P.S. They were lucky I had to use tapes ;D!
Sadly Munich also marks the end of the first part of the season for me. I will be skipping Vail as I will start with preparations for the lead season and consequentially for combined.
I wish everyone good luck in Vail and see you in Villars. There I will be trying to escape the fatigue while reaching the top.
